Perera Hussein Publishing House

Perera Hussein Publishing House is looking for original, unpublished stories to include in their extremely successful MilkRice series – Sri Lankan stories written for Sri Lankan children.

We are seeking stories between 1000 and 2500 words that reflect life in all its forms and wonders based in Sri Lanka for children aged 9 to 12.

We would especially like stories that deal with the universal themes of: diversity, inclusion, humour, loss, fear, love, anxiety, anger, loneliness, joy, curiosity, and greed.

New writers, established writers and writers we’ve included in other anthologies are all equally welcome. Writers must be at least 20 years old.

The submission must be sent by email in a Word document, Times New Roman font size 12.
Your name, address, email, and phone number must be on the title page of the story.

Some tips to consider:
We would like your stories to be provocative yet inspire deep thought and reflection. We like motivated characters, high stakes and gripping action. Funny and lighthearted is always an asset. Please use age appropriate language and vocabulary, which will make your story accessible and authentic. As much as possible, use familiar settings and names. Up your game and don’t give us talking elephants and thinking trees, we want modern, upbeat, inclusive, energetic stories that celebrate diversity. We want fearless and imaginative stories. We want the stories you want your children to read!
Each published entry will be paid Rs 5,000 and the author will receive one free copy of the book.

Submissions Open: 7 May 2025
Submissions Close: 15 July 2025
